Description: Neighborhood Tree Planting

On a Saturday morning, teachers, students and parents joined with Canton Canopy to plant native trees in the neighborhoods around our school. Students worked for four hours digging holes, breaking open root balls, planting and mulching young trees. Before we started planting, the students discussed with the larger group, the purpose of this activity and the benefits to the environment and the residents of the neighborhoods.

Action 2

Teacher(s): Ms Riorda

Grade: 8th

Date: September 28, 2018

Description: Students taking action!  As part of their unit on water quality, my 8th grade students were so upset about the health of the Patterson Park Pond that they decided to take action. They began by sending letters to the current Mayor of Baltimore City and to the Director of Baltimore’s Department of Parks and Recreation. After receiving the letters, both the Mayor’s office and Parks and Recreation responded.  We set up a meeting with the director and invited vested community organizations such as Friends of Patterson Park and Patterson Park Audubon, to learn about the measures that have been taken in the past and plans for the future maintenance of this important habitat.
